This website is a hub for the various things I do as a designer. Most of my professional life is focused on design, especially design for print and digital books (ebooks). The links provided here provide a pretty good glimpse into my publication design. I expect ebooks to be a major area of growth, both for the ePub (iPad and B&N) and Mobi formats (Kindle and Sony, etc ereaders) as well as in the more versitile form of ePDFs. Our work in ebooks has expanded faster than we have been able to update our websites, which is why I have converted this site to a blog.
When I’m not working or studying what’s current in publishing, marketing, or brand identity, I occassionally have time to do something really different that gets me away from computers—very traditional art, such as oil painting. So there’s a little bit of that here too is you explore the site. If you follow the links to my personal stuff, you’ll find some portraits and murals, some commissions and some projects of my own, including images of my house featured on HGTV’s Generation Renovation. The old-world Bohemian style is admittedly a big departure from my contemporary design work or the edgy editorial illustration in my portfolio, but that’s what makes it interesting.
A Short Résumé
I started out selling art when I was 15 and not very many years later ended up working as a designer for the city of Dallas, and on the side, as a free-lance illustrator doing advertising, editorial, and children’s book illustration.
I later accepted an offer to work for a publisher in Oxford. I returned to England (I was born there) and got deeply involved in book design and book production. Four years later I co-founded RD Studio, a design studio now based in Seattle and London that specializes in book design and various forms of package design. RD Studio is a business that combines book design with marketing strategies. My clients include many individual business professionals and authors as well as major industry leaders such as MicroSoft, AOL, Coca-Cola, and the world’s top ad agencies and publishers such as Barons, Columbia University Press, Cornell University Press, C&T Publishing, DDB Needham Worldwide, Glencoe, Guthy-Renker, Harcourt Brace, Henry Holt & Co, Lintas, McGraw-Hill, Scholastic Magazine, Ten Speed Press, etc.
